5 Things about Dragons you May Not Know

Gong Xi Fa Cai! We’re about to start the Chinese Year of the Water Dragon. Whether you follow the Chinese Zodiac or not, here are 5 things about dragons worth knowing in 2012:

1. Dreams to Reality:

The dragon is the ONLY mythical animal on the chinese zodiac. It is the link between the imaginary world and the real world and has a special place in Chinese culture (In the same way you cannot deface a US flag in America, you cannot deface a dragon image in China). In 2012, what is the one dream you will bring into reality? Pin it up with a dragon image. Or copy Angelina and get a tattoo...

2. The Symbol of Flow:

The dragon symbolises the protector of flow, and in Chinese myths is always controlling the waters, floods, seas and rivers. Its three joints represent the trinity of flow (creation, preservation, destruction). In 2012, what will you begin, what will you preserve, and what will you end to stay in flow?

3. The Power of Nine:

The dragon is related to the number 9, the highest single digit number and Chinese symbol of celestial power. The chinese dragon has 81 Yang scales (9x9) and 36 Yin scales (9x4). Nine dragons was the symbol of the Chinese Emperor (and if you have ever been to Hong Kong, ‘Kowloon’ means ‘nine dragons’ in Chinese). The chinese character for ‘nine’ is the same as the word ‘forever’. In 2012, what part of you will you develop - a skill or quality that will lift you higher, and be with you forever?

4. The Celestial Messenger:

The dragon has spread through all cultures, and today are found in everything from Shrek to Harry Potter. The English word comes from the Greek ‘‘drakan” which means ‘water dragon’, derived from ‘drakein’ which means ‘to see more clearly’. Up to modern time, the dragon is seen as carrying a secret or message that it protects and passes to the select few. In 2012, what dragon will you seek out. In what area do you want to ‘see more clearly’?

5. A Sign of the Times:

2012 is the year of the Water Dragon, which only comes around every 60 years. The last Water Dragon year was 1952 (the first year to see a return-flight of a passenger plane across the Atlantic), and before that was 1892 (The year Edison got a patent for a two-way telegraph. It was also the year of the first basketball game). In 2012, what will you invent? What will you create that will leave a legacy?

This trip, hosted by Roger Hamilton, is the second of the Crystal Quests. Each is exclusively for members of Roger’s Crystal Circle, Masters Program and their families (for children 10 and older). Each is a magical journey that creates a golden thread through history, giving us a new level of insight into our own place and time.

The Crystal Quest 2012
A journey of discovery

In the first Crystal Quest, we unlocked a magic key that linked four empires: Ancient Egypt, Cleopatra’s Alexandria, Ancient Rome and the Renaissance. This key was linked to the Emerald Tablet, which Aristotle directed Alexander the Great to find, and that once found was kept in the city he founded, Alexandria. This key formed the basis of Hermetic Philosophy. We find it in its mythical founder, Hermes Tismegistus in Ancient Rome, in the heart of the Medici libraries that sparked the Renaissance, within Isaac Newton’s alchemical studies and in ‘The Strangest Secret” as told by Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford and the early 21st Century entrepreneurs to Napoleon Hill, on to Earl Nightingale, sparking the modern personal development movement.

On this second Crystal Quest, we take the adventure wider and deeper. This magic key can be found at the root of all the great empires from Ancient China, to the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas. It was what allowed them to grow with certainty and clarity, as it gave the system to master space, time and our place within both. It is this same key that give the great 21st century leaders mastery over their own lives and the legacies they leave.

Sat 23rd June to Thu 28th June:

The Incan Empire

We begin our adventure in the Incan town of Cuzco, 3,400m high in the Andes. You can reach it by a short flight from Lima. Cuzco is a World Heritage Site, and the historical capital of the Incan Empire. We meet at our hotel in the evening to connect with our group and get an overview of the trip.

On our first full day, Sunday 24th, we take part in the Inti Raymi Festival. This is the second largest festival in South America, and is the ancient Incan celebration of the Sun God, Inti, on the Winter Solstice. The festival takes place at Sacsayhuaman, which archaeologists only discovered three years ago was first built before the Incas arrived in Peru. Attending the largest and final solstice celebration before the 2012 December summer solstice gives us a backdrop to compare how the the sun, moon and starts defined the lives of the world’s greatest ancient civilisations, from the Chinese, to Egyptian, Greek, Aztec, Incan & Mayan cultures.

On Day Two, we visit Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. 2011 was the 100th anniversary of Machu Picchu’s rediscovery, after lying dormant for 500 years. While the primary use of the site is disputed, there is no doubt from its layout that it served as an observatory. From its layout, we will see parallels between how different civilisations connected themselves to time and place through their architecture.

With the shape of temples and cities mimicking sacred mountains and animals, following the path of the sun, moon and constellations, we’ll see how our definition of ‘environmental’ just scratches the surface of the far deeper connection our ancestors had with the natural world.

By Day Three, we will extend our journey from Cuzco to the Sacred Valley, visiting historic centres from Pisac to Ollangtaytambo. We will see the role that water played in ancient myth as a connector between the divine and terrestrial. What did the snake, puma and condor represent to the Incas? How was this mirrored in the Mayan and Aztec cultures? We will see parallels within all ancient cultures through the Chakana, the 12 pointed Inca Cross, to the 12 cycle calendar, five elements, three worlds and the tree of life.

On Day Four we travel to Lima, where we will spend a day experiencing the shift from an ancient capital to a modern capital. We will visit the intricate patterns of the dead in the catacombs of Iglesia de San Francisco, in the Historic Centre of Lima, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. How are different cultures defined by how they treat birth and death? What creates a culture that rewards human sacrifice - whether a Mayan ritual or a modern country honoring the men who died at war?

We will see up close how the Spanish ended the Inca and Aztec empires, and what we can learn today from patterns in history. On Day Five we head to Cancun, for the second half of our adventure.

Fri 29th June to Tue 3rd July:
The Mayan Empire

On Day Six we travel to Chichen Itza, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.
We will see how the Mayans became the most advanced astronomers of that period. Where did they get the knowledge from, and how is that mapped out within the complex of Chichen Itza? How do the 4 sides, 52 panels and 365 steps of El Castillo, link to the Inca calendar, our modern-day 52 week calendar and the 52 year Venus cycle that formed the basis of the Mayan calendar?

We will look at the same connections that led Aristotle to send Alexander the Great out East in search of answers. Why are the Trigrams from the Chinese I Ching in the Mayan Calendar? Why does Quetzalcoatl, the serpent god at the centre of the Aztec and Mayan Culture, representing Venus, have the same symbol as the dragon at the centre of Chinese mythology, which also represents Venus?

The roots of Chinese mythology in Incan and Mayan culture is little explored by the West, but runs as deep as the basis for the entire birth of our Western Culture.

‘Chi’ means ‘To cause to happen’ in Incan Quechua. ‘Chi-Chen Itza’ translates in both Chinese and Maya to: ‘Chi’ - universal energy, ‘Chen’ - narrated or brought into form, ‘Itza’ - through a Wizard or Magician.

We will deepen our journey into the world of story telling through numbers and symbols. We will decode Chichen Itza and compare its symbolism to Machu Picchu, the Pyramids in Egypt, Solomon’s Temple and the Forbidden City in China. We will end the day in Medira, which was built on Ichcaanzihó, the City of Five Pyramids. We will spend the night in the heart of the Yucutan Peninsula, surrounded by over 200 active archeological excavations.

On Day Seven we visit Uxmal, with the spectacular Pyramid of the Magician rising above the trees. The Chinese Ancient creation myth of Pangu, a dwarf hatched from a cosmic egg, from which all things are created, can also be found with the Hindu myth of Brahma hatched from a cosmic egg. The egg symbolism links to the Mayan 260 day cycle within the calendar, which matches the human pregnancy cycle to birth and the venus cycle. This link between Venus, fertility and our astronomical calendar can be found in every culture from the goddesses of Parvati in India, Isis in Egypt, Aphrodite in Greece and Venus in Rome to the symbolism of dragons and serpents as representing fertility, mortality and time in every great culture.

We will find, in the depths of the Mexican jungle, that the story behind the Pyramid of the Magician is of a magician dwarf born from a cosmic egg, from which all power was created. Within this complex we will also step deeper into how the roots behind our rhythm of time were formed: from our 60 minutes an hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. This deeper appreciation for the world of magic that we live in, sets the scene as we set off for the rest of the tour. While the highlights are touched on here, throughout the adventure there will be many surprises along the way.

On Day Eight, we have a free day in Merida to visit the museums, the sites or shop before heading back to Cancun on Day Nine, via Ek Balam, one of the newest archealogical sites and a further stunning stop on our journey. We spend a final night in Cancun, before our completion, when we bring all the parts of the Crystal Quest together.

How did the Mayans create a calendar that maps both mechanical and synchronous time - what the Greeks called Chronos and Kairos? How does this give us a tool today that is already being used by leaders and entrepreneurs to time their great moves? How does the ‘time map’ the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans created link back to the Chinese calendar, the I Ching, the Tree of Life and the basis for both the religious and scientific myths that make up our Western Civilisations? How does this map link to the E8 crystal - reported recently in the New Scientific and academic journals as ‘the most beautiful structure in mathematics’ and the scientific basis for a new unified theory of everything?

Businesses like Google and Facebook have access to billions. Group buying sites like Groupon, and crowd sharing like Airbnb are growing at a rapid rate. As Roger Hamilton says, what this new breed of business has in common are three core factors:

STEVE JOBS: Connecting the Dots

With the passing of Steve Jobs, it’s easy to think that Jobs’ career began and ended with Apple. It did, but the fastest way from A to B is rarely a straight line. In Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech, he talks about ‘connecting the dots’, saying “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”

Here’s thirteen dots that defined the story of Steve:

DOT ONE: When Steve Jobs launched Apple with Steve Wozniak in 1976, they decided to name the company after the fruit that according to legend spurred Isaac Newton’s theories on gravity. Jobs then spent most of his life defying gravity, and defying the odds.

DOT TWO: Starting with the premise that the best ideas are already out there, Jobs negotiated with Xerox to grant Apple engineers access to the Xerox PARC facilities in return for selling them one million dollars in pre-IPO Apple stock. It was from this visit that Jobs collected the ideas behind the fundamentals of today’s PC – the graphic user interface, mouse and pointer.

DOT THREE: How did Jobs go from start-up to listed company in four years? By getting his mentors to work for him. Jobs brought on a local VC, Mike Markkula, who bought shares in the company and subsequently became CEO. He brought in Regis McKenna, the best public relations man in Silicon Valley, to market the Apple II. Markkula was responsible for the early financing of the company, and for taking Apple public in 1980.

DOT FOUR: Despite becoming worth $217 million when Apple listed, Jobs kept relying purely on his intuition. Apple’s head of marketing, Mike Murray, commented, “Steve did his market research by looking into the mirror every morning.” Sales stalled, Jobs’ management style was seen by his board as a liability and, in 1985, he was thrown out of the company he had started nine years earlier.

DOT FIVE: That might have been the end of another entrepreneur story, was it not for Jobs’ perseverance. Having left Apple, he launched NeXT, to provide PCs to the education market. Apple sued Jobs for launching in competition, prompting him to say, “It’s hard to think that a $2 billion company with 4,300 plus people couldn’t compete with six people in blue jeans.” Jobs sold all but one of his Apple shares, and Apple continued to languish, falling from 20% market share to under 5% by 1996. Jobs, in the meantime, struggled with NeXT, burning through $250 million of investors’ money as he tried to market his new computers.

DOT SIX: In the same year that Jobs founded NeXT, George Lucas was looking to sell a small computer animation group he owned. Disney rejected an offer to buy 50% for $15 million, and a deal to sell to Ross Perot and Phillips for $30 million fell through. Jobs ended up negotiating Lucas to under $10 million for the business, thinking he could market the high-end animation computers that the group had designed.

DOT SEVEN: Renamed ‘Pixar’, Jobs’ new company began marketing the Pixar Image Computer to the medical market – with little success. By 1989, with Pixar losing over $1 million each month, and NeXT faring little better, Jobs found himself left with less than 20% of the $150 million he had received when he sold his Apple stock. At the rate he was going, within two years he would be back to zero.

DOT EIGHT: Taking drastic measures, Jobs sold the hardware side of Pixar for several million, taking a massive loss. By luck, an animated short movie the Pixar team produced in their spare time, “Tin Toy”, received an Oscar, and in 1993, Disney approved a full feature joint venture with Pixar called “Toy Story”.

DOT NINE: The victory was short lived with Disney shutting production of Toy Story down later in the year after losing confidence in the script. Then in 1994, Disney lost four executives in a helicopter crash, including Chief Operating Officer Frank Wells. Jobs was left attempting to get Toy Story back on track while also having to close the NeXT manufacturing facility and sales operation. Most of the NeXT team left. The investors, having put in another $100 million, saw that money disappear too. Toy Story, now back on Disney’s agenda, it would need to earn at least $100 million for Pixar to make any money from it at all; more than any other Disney film had made at the time.

DOT TEN: Even so, an audacious Jobs, down to his last dollar, decided to bet that not only would Toy Story be a success, it would enable him to publicly list Pixar and raise further funds. In November 1995, Toy Story opened to enormous acclaim, becoming the highest grossing release of the year, generating over $450 million in sales. One week later, Pixar had its IPO. Less than twelve months after his worst year financially, Steve Jobs was a billionaire.

DOT ELEVEN: Then, in 1996, Gil Emilio (the new CEO of Apple) went hunting for a new operating system and finally found it… in NeXT. Approaching Jobs for his system, Jobs was only interested in selling the entire company. Apple bought it for $377.5 million in cash and $1.5 million in Apple shares. In one fell swoop, Jobs could pay off all his investors and was involved with Apple again – after over ten years.

DOT TWELVE: In 1997 Apple sales were $7 billion and losses were over $1 billion. Jobs took to the challenge of revitalizing Apple. By 1998, Jobs launched the iMac, followed with the iPod, iPhone and iPad. The rise of Apple to become the most valuable company in the world are well documented, but less is known of the trials that shaped Jobs in his darker times.

DOT THIRTEEN: In January 2006, Disney (having rejected the chance to buy 50% of Pixar for $15 million ten years earlier) bought a transformed Pixar from Jobs for $7.4 billion in stock, making Jobs Disney’s largest individual shareholder and a billionaire for the third time.

To become a billionaire is already rare. To become a billionaire from scratch (or from $1 billion in losses) in three entirely different industries is unprecedented.

Jobs died today with a net worth of over $8 billion after having worked for $1 a year for the last 14 years.

Many people have heard his quote “Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me... Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful... that's what matters to me.”

What most don’t know was that this was from a quote in the Wall Street Journal in Summer 1993 – Not when he was sitting on a billion dollars, but in his darkest days, outcast from Apple and the Tech community, struggling with both NeXT and an aimless Pixar, and about to run out of money.

That was Steve.

The growth of social networks means that people aren’t as interested in advertisements as recommendations. They aren’t as interested in corporate PR as customer reviews. This loss of friction doesn’t just mean institutions still relying on the means of production will fall, but governments who rely on barriers to raise taxes will also increasingly fail.

What can you do about this? Ensure that you have mobile platform to sell your products, and that your customer base becomes your primary asset and sales platform. Set up an affiliate or rewards program that enables them to be rewarded and recognized for recommending your services to their networks. Change focus from protecting your property to giving value for free, and build a business based on your top 20% of customers who will keep coming back to you for more.

On Roger Hamilton’s September ‘Fast Forward your Business’ Tour, he is covering the Top 10 Trends that will be impacting your business today. The first of Roger Hamilton’s Top 10 Trends is about the artificial intelligence. It is obvious to all of us that Internet companies like Google, Facebook, Netflix and Amazon are getting increasingly intelligent about how they collect data about us, and then use this data to give us more relevant information.

Roger Hamilton explains that this has turned the traditional model of customer intimacy on its head.

“Traditional thinking says that the bigger you get, the more impersonal you get. The implication of this is that our expectations will become (and often already are) that services we use will know us better than we know ourselves. Search will become a thing of the past (other than simply for recreation), and any company that does not aim to give the customer an experience that enhances their own identity will be out of business.

What can you do about this? Ensure you begin today with a process of collecting and capturing information on your customers, and that you have products and services that encourage more personalized connection and collection. Being personal today still isn’t personal enough.

At Roger Hamilton’s upcoming ‘Fast Forward your Business’ Tour to Japan, England and South Africa, he will be covering the Top 10 Trends impacting our business in the next 12 months.

We asked Roger about recent events in world markets, and how that will impact his talk. Roger Hamilton always has fresh insights when looking at any situation, and it was no different here. He spoke of this week’s decision by Venezuela to repatriate all gold reserves from around the world and shift all their currency reserves from the US and Europe to Russia, China and Brazil.

“Chavez has decided to recall the country’s 211 tons of gold reserves in European and US banks, including the Bank of England and JP Morgan Chase, back to Venezuela. He is also moving all cash reserves out of Europe and the US to Brazil, Russia and China. This is the first sign in governments shifting the base of the financial system, which will lead to far bigger global instability than we have see so far.”

Roger Hamilton continues: “Banks leverage their holdings many times over. So for example, JP Morgan has securities backed against their gold reserves which are 100 times greater than their reserves. The gold that Venezuela will request back from JP Morgan is equivalent to their entire current holdings. It only takes a few more countries to repeat Venezuela’s move for the entire centre of financial strength to leave US and Europe and move to the developing countries.”

We’re excited to announce that we have students aged 11-13 flying in from over 10 countries to attend the camp at the beginning of July. Roger Hamilton said “A big thanks to Shah and the team for all the work they have put in to this, Ajay from the Green School, Nyuman from Green Camp and Bucky and Jen. It’s going to be an event that changes lives.”

Roger Hamilton added that volunteers were also flying in from around the world to support the event, and that many parents would also be there for the graduation on the last day. Based on the success of this first Green SuperCamp, a Senior Green SuperCamp is being scheduled for December. If you have children from 14 to 18 years old, we’ll see you then!

Talent Dynamics for Schools: The Gen Y Revolution

What if we learned entrepreneurship at school?

What if we all learned to be entrepreneurs at school? What if all the best entrepreneurs DO learn their skills at school – it’s just that most of us were too busy attending class to join them?
As you go about your business today, what are the chances you could still be focusing too much at showing up for the lesson while the competition is out in the playground getting deals done?
Here’s five signs you’re still living your habits from school:

1.    You’re sitting at a desk.
2.    Your work feels like work.
3.    You’re waiting for the bell.
4.    There’s a bully in the hall.
5.    You think there’s more to life than this.

This month Scott Adams, creator of the Dilbert Cartoon, came up with a great article called “How to Get a Real Education”, which got published in the Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/ScottAdams).

Here’s an excerpt: “There was a small business on our campus called The Coffee House. One day the managers of The Coffee House had a meeting to discuss two topics. First, our Minister of Employment was recommending that we fire a bartender, who happened to be one of my best friends. Second, we needed to choose a leader for our group. On the first question, there was a general consensus that my friend lacked both the will and the potential to master the bartending arts. I reluctantly voted with the majority to fire him.”

“But when it came to discussing who should be our new leader, I pointed out that my friend—the soon-to-be-fired bartender—was tall, good-looking and so gifted at b.s. that he'd be the perfect leader. By the end of the meeting I had persuaded the group to fire the worst bartender that any of us had ever seen…and ask him if he would consider being our leader. My friend nailed the interview and became our Commissioner. He went on to do a terrific job. That was the year I learned everything I know about management.”

Scott goes on to give the seven lessons he would put in an entrepreneurial education – the same lessons I share in Your Life, Your Legacy, including failing forward and attracting luck.

Most importantly, as he says, “To succeed, first you must do something. And if that doesn't work, which can be 90% of the time, do something else. Luck finds the doers.”

The future will be run by robots, but will they be Australian robots?

Sydney, Australia. – Will you be clever enough to have a job in the future? Earlier in February an IBM ‘artificlal intelligence’ computer beat the world’s best human contestants in the TV game show ‘Jeopardy’. Ken Jennings, the previously undisputed king of Jeopardy commented on his loss “’Quiz show contestant may be the first job made redundant by Watson, but it won’t be the last”.

Ray Kurzweil, futurist and co-founder of the Singularity University, said of Watson “It is going to be more difficult to seriously argue that there are human tasks that computers will never achieve.” The United States and Japan has traditionally led Australia in technological innovation, so will we be living in a future where we no longer have jobs, because foreign machines have taken them all on less pay and benefits? Or will our boss be a home-grown Australian robot?

Kurweil believes our salvation lies in harnessing the future by preparing for it. Together with the founder of the ‘X Prize’, Peter Diamandis, he has assembled the world’s experts in artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology and other exponential technologies under one roof. The University, based in the NASA research centre in Silicon Valley, prepares students and business leaders for the opportunities and challenges in a radically different future.

For the first time, Australians will get a first-hand peak into this future, when Roger James Hamilton, a social entrepreneur, speaker and Singularity University Graduate meets with business owners and entrepreneurs in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Perth from 20^th to 28^th March. Hamilton will be speaking on the ‘Fast Forward you Business’ tour on how the trends in our global economies and technologies are affecting Australians directly.

Hamilton hopes the tour will inspire Australian entrepreneurs to take a leading role in global innovation, and plans to take a group out to Silicon Valley in April, prior to the launch of the Australian Innovation Festival beginning on 26^th April. Asked if Australian businesses have what it takes to be on the leading edge, he said “Australians have invented everything from pre-paid postage, the photocopier and pacemaker to the fridge, the black box in every airplane, and more recently wifi and Google Maps. It was even an Australian back in 1902 who came up with the idea of sticking note paper together and calling it a notepad. I think we’re up to the job of creating the future.”

A Wild New World

Have you noticed nations aren't as stable as they used to be? I'm writing from Ireland, which was in the news in 2010 for being bailed out by the EU. The worst is far from over, with property prices falling by over 40%, and with 2,800 'ghost estates' which were built by developers in the boom years and now lie empty. As an entrepreneur, how can you guard against all your good work coming undone by simply starting your enterprise in the wrong country at the wrong time?

Every country has a master plan. If you were to invest in a business you would want to see the business plan, so it makes sense if you're going to invest in a country to see their master plan (Ireland's five year plan published last year is actually called the Recovery Plan). Have a look online to see what your country has in store for you...

Who wants to be a millionaire? I mean, really??

Written on the day gold hit a new high of US$1,315…

The idea of being a millionaire sounds seductive. I am a millionaire – a multi-millionaire - and it doesn’t feel any different than not being one. Given that when I was younger, being a millionaire felt like a big deal, I thought it would be worth working out why – when I was younger – it seemed bigger than it was.

The reason, I found out, is that at the time it was. When I was six years old, it was 1974. Back then, a million dollars was A LOT of money. Now, it isn’t.

My research took me further back. In fact, all the way back to Isaac Newton, who – along with revolutionising modern physics – was the master of the Mint in London. He was the first to link currency to gold. Things pretty much stayed the same for two hundred years. A pound could be swapped for pretty much the same amount of gold in the early 1900’s as it could in the 1700’s.

The problems with the value of money really became apparent when I was four years old. Nixon brought the US dollar off the gold standard in 1972 after which all hell broke loose. At that age, there isn’t much you can do to protest (although I tried). It’s difficult to really appreciate the magnitude with which our wealth has been eroded since then – but I’ll do my best with this fact:

In the last 40 years, world currencies have lost 97% of their value

From the 1800’s to around 1918, an ounce of gold could be bought for less than US$20. That crept up to around US$40 when I was born, in 1968. By 1972, due to the US need to print more money to fund the Vietnam war, the cost of an ounce of gold jumped up to $60. So it took over 100 years to hit $20, another 50 years to hit $40, and another 4 years to hit $60.

That was the time when the Europeans began trading in their US dollars for Gold, and Nixon decided to take the US dollar off the gold standard and turn it into a ‘fiat currency’ – which really means it’s not backed by anything other than future tax dollars. The results? An ounce of gold cost over $300 by 1979, over $600 by 2006 and over $1,300 by 2010.

That means in gold terms, what was $40 when I was born, is now $1,300. That's a depreciation of 97%... Money today is worth 3% of what it was in 1968. Being a millionaire today is the equivalent of being a $30,000-aire in 1968…

Another way to look at it? Someone who was a millionaire back then, if their money was in gold, would be worth $300 million today. Someone who was a millionaire back then, if their money was in dollars, would be worth $1 million today.

Addendum…

Predictions are that currencies have a lot further to fall. That means that $1 million will be worth a 1968 wheelbarrow. My advice? Maximise your investment in assets such as commodities and property (particularly in Asia), while keeping a level of debt you can service, and as currencies devalue, so will your liabilities.

Holding on to your money - at the speed with which it is devaluing - is the worse thing you can do. Governments are printing money faster than you can spend it.

XL Nation Handover - a Nation Without Borders

We held our second XL National Day on 31st March 2010, and on that same day, XL Nation received its certificate of incorporation as a not-for-profit organisation. Yesterday, I signed an agreement with Katrina McGilchrist which officially assigns all assets and memberships of XL Results Foundation to XL Nation.

It has been a year since the first XL National Day on 31st March 2010. Thank you to the three XL Nation Directors, Martin Jimmink, Charles Buffett and Katrina McGilchrist. Together with Michelle Clarke and the XL Nation team they have been laying the groundwork over the last year for the growth of XL Nation.

I am very grateful to the XL Nation team and XL Leaders who have stepped up this year to create circles, collaborated on new projects and invited new changemakers to XL Nation. XL Life Membership is now an XL Nation Founding Membership with many new benefits and the same mechanism for transferability.

With the collective actions of the active XL Members and Citizens, we are seeing growing momentum towards our 2020 Vision. The new XL Nation structure has made our community far more accessible than the old XL Results Foundation structure in both quantity and quality – with many new XL Citizens joining us at events and leading global change makers now choosing to participate (See the links below for examples of this).

We sent an email to all our XL members today to take one or more of the five actions below and to add to that momentum. I add them here so that whether you are an XL Member, XL Citizen, or a changemaker ready to join the movement, you can take the actions and add to the flow:

A Global Entrepreneurship Monitor special report on Entrepreneurship education published in March 2010 reported that across 30 countries surveyed, the lack of quality education in entrepreneurship was the third most frequently mentioned constraint to entrepreneurial success after financial support and government policies. It also ranked as the No. 1 recommendation by experts on how to improve the entrepreneurial environment in these countries.

According to XL Group Chairman and co-founder, Roger James Hamilton, the merger will lead to entrepreneur education centres to address this need. "Most entrepreneurs and investors are constantly seeking more effective connection to the resources and connections that will serve them. The OneLife centres we are developing provide serviced offices, mentoring, and a full schedule of education with access to world-class speakers and entrepreneurs. They will also support XL Nation’s mission of connecting change makers to address and contribute to global challenges more effectively."

Roy McDonald, founder of OneLife, commented “XL Group has attracted a global customer base while we have been focused on a local model and comprehensive support to serve local investors and their families. This merger gives us the opportunity to take our OneLife centre model and expand it internationally.” The new company, One Life International, will begin with its main offices in Gold Coast, Sydney and Singapore, with two workshop retreats in Hunter Valley and Bali. It will begin by focusing on developing new centres in Australia.

One Week to XL Bali Convention!

Congratulations to XL Nation Directors, Martin Jimmink (Chairman), Charles Buffett and Katrina McGilchrist for stepping up to the incorporation of XL Nation as a non-profit social entrepreneur organisation. We are a week away from the Bali Convention, and XL Leaders from around the world will be converging on XL Vision Villas to discuss and collaborate on our journey towards World Wide Wealth in 2010. I'm looking forward to being a part of it!

Why are we meeting?

2010 marks the end of the first decade of this new millennium. This is our opportunity to ensure the year also marks the first full year of XL Nation as a global network of social entrepreneurs sharing resources to collectively contribute to World Wide Wealth - a connected world to support every change maker. We will be celebrating the 130+ XL Award nominees, and announcing the winner. We will be discussing the priorities to build circles of trust and shared platforms of social profit - the XL Library, Opportunities Exchange and Marketplace. We'll be recording the key parts of the day and I hear there is an interactive part to the day that all XL Citizens and Founding Members can participate in.

Why 13th October?

Have you read Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol"? You would have read of the care with which the founding fathers picked their dates, places and names to respect the societies and individuals that were aligned to their purpose. XL Nation has followed a similar tradition, from the way it is structured, its processes and the key dates.

On October 13th, 1307 on one day the reign of the Knights Templar came to a sudden end in France. Despite the attempt by King Philip to capture them all, less than 10% were captured and the rest created new beginnings - largely in Switzerland and Scotland. A chain of events led to the Swiss Banking system on the one hand and a tradition of 'free man' declarations from the Magna Carta to the United States Constitution on the other. On the 702nd anniversary of that new beginning, we will be meeting at an equally challenging time where old paradigms are being questioned and new social structures are gearing towards global change.

Measuring Social Profit: How to get from Personal Flow to Global Flow
(and back again)

Most of us are seeking a wealthy, peaceful life and a wealth peaceful world. The question is, how can we effectively translate one to the other? Especially when the first can often feel small and the second feels big. How do we pick the right solutions for our lives and fit those into the right solutions for the planet?

We believe XL Nation has the answer. Actually, three steps and one answer. It has a lot to do with how 50 trillion cells have already figured out how to live mostly healthy, peaceful lives collectively in our bodies.

The first step is a cell that belongs – in XL Nation that’s called an XL Circle: A self-forming group around a place, profession, passion, purpose, industry or interest. The second step is a leadership that takes responsibility for what goes in the cell and what comes out of it. There’s just five particles that flow through to paint the full picture (called a Pixl – “Particle in XL”/"Profit in XL"), and each has a leader accountable for that one Pixl. The third step is how those five things make up the fabric of global change: We do our part locally, and the world connects through what we flow collectively. Just like the way our cells look after us.

Three steps: Show up, step up, give back. One answer: A rhythm of flow

What are the five Pixls of XL Nation’s flow?

Cells have three jobs. The first is to preserve themselves: All XL Citizens in an XL Circle commit to showing up, and inviting others with like minds to join the circle. The second job is to turn complex molecules into energy and turn energy into molecules to add value to flow. In XL we have five different Pixls of flow – which like molecules can be brought it to create energy and direction in your life, and every time you meet you turn your energy into new forms that fit these five. The third job is to replicate. Every Circle seeks to launch new circles and we have a family tree in XL Nation where we can see all Circles from the prudes to the promiscuous…

Here’s the five Pixls of flow:

1. Knowledge – Creating the XL Library
2. Opportunities – Creating the XL Opportunities Exchange
3. Successes – Creating the XL News Channel
4. Measures – Creating the XL World Rankings
5. Causes – Creating the XL World Wide Wealth Directory

1. XL Library:
The first Pixls are the Knowledge Pixls that make up the XL Library. Knowledge is the link between information and action (That means not just a video, but a video together with an example of how the information in the video is being turned into tangible action). On XL World, there is an XL Library where you can download or view any audio or video that has been uploaded by other XL Circles or XL Citizens. Each can be rated, you can sort them by popularity, and you can find them by Wealth Dynamics category.

The Scout in every circle will pull in a Knowledge Pixl at every session, it will be viewed or discussed and examples of two or three specific actions that XL Citizens will take from that discussion will be posted under the video/audio in the XL Library. If someone in the circle is giving a live piece of learning, this will be recorded and uploaded to add to the XL Library.

When a new Pixl is added (always to the video section of XL World), it is always tagged by the Scout or Citizen who adds it. Here are the tags you’ll find in every Knowledge Pixl

The first tag will be K-PIXL (so we can search and find all of them within the video section of XL World amongst all the videos). The second will be one of the 13 tags that categorise the type of learning based on Wealth Dynamics flow:

4) Partnerships
5) Service
6) Investments
7) Finance
8) Systems
9) Wisdom
10) Relationships
11) Health
12) Contribution

Whenever a Knowledge Pixl has been used in a circle, the Scout will post a comment on the video/audio with learning and the examples of action to be taken, and a link back to their XL Circle page. They will also provide a link on the XL Circle page to the Knowledge Pixl. This cross-reference enables any XL Citizen to gain knowledge through the XL Library or through the XL Circle they may be following.

2. XL Opportunity Exchange:
The second Pixls are the Opportunity Pixls that make up the XL Opportunity Exchange. These are not requests of what you need, but opportunities of what you have to offer. These have a specific format of who you are, what your mission is, what you offer, who you are offering it to, and what you seek in return. On XL World, there is an XL Opportunities Exchange where you can download or view any opportunity uploaded by other XL Circles or XL Citizens. You can search for these by key word, country, or Wealth Dynamics category.

The Guide in every circle will pull in Opportunity Pixls from XL World at every session that are relevant to Citizens in the Circle. Two Citizens will also present their own opportunity, and the Guide will ensure these get posted on XL World during or immediately after the circle. These are included in the XL Opportunity Exchange (which is a part of the Forum section of XL World) and tagged by the Guide or Citizen who adds it. All XL Citizens can then respond back directly to the XL Citizen who offered the opportunity.

Here are the tags you’ll find in every Opportunity Pixl: The first tag will be O-PIXL (so we can search and find all of them within XL World amongst all the discussion postings). The second will be one of the 13 tags that categorise the type of opportunity based on Wealth Dynamics flow:

2) Promotion
3) Team
4) Partnership
5) Trade
6) Investment
7) Outsource
8) License

10) Family

Whenever an Opportunity Pixl has been created in a circle, the Guide will post the opportunity in the Forum section on XL World as a new Discussion, tag it, and add links back to the XL Citizen and the XL Circle. They will also provide a link on the XL Circle page to the Opportunity Pixl.

3. XL News Channel:
The third Pixls are the Success Pixls that make up the XL News Channel. These are living examples of what XL Citizens are achieving within XL Nation, that others can be inspired and informed by. These have a specific format of who you are, what your challenge or goal had been, what your actions were, what your success was, and your key lesson from the experience. On XL World, the XL News Channel can be found within the blog section, where you can download or view any success story uploaded by other XL Circles or XL Citizens. You can search for these by key word, country, or Wealth Dynamics category.

The Reporter in every circle will pull in Success Pixls from XL World at every session that are relevant to Citizens in the Circle. Two Citizens will also present their own success story (nominated from the last Circle session), and the Guide will ensure these get posted on the XL World blog section, each as a new blog, during or immediately after the circle.

Here are the tags you’ll find in every Success Pixl: The first tag will be S-PIXL (so we can search and find all of them within XL World amongst all the blogs). The second will be one of the 13 tags that categorise the profile the success is related to on the Wealth Dynamics square:

3) Supporter
4) Deal Maker
5) Trader
6) Accumulator
7) Lord
8) Mechanic
9) Mixed Team

4. XL Scoreboard:
The fourth Pixls are the Measure Pixls that make up the XL Scoreboard. These are a running total for the year (beginning on XL National Day on 31st March) for each XL Circle’s combined giving – cash amount donated, time given and resources given (an estimated cash amount). On XL World, the XL Scoreboard is a blog page linked to the home page, which has a score and rankings. Each Treasurer adds their latest results to the blog as a comment, together with a number of examples of where the donations in their Circle are going and the results they are achieving. The blog is then updated weekly by our Global Treasurer with the numbers against each circle.

This manual process will eventually be automated, but it will work for now. There are no tags for the measures. The Treasurer collects the measurers during the first half of each Circle session, so they can report on the results when it is their section. The measures then posted in both the XL Circle and as a comment on the XL Scoreboard Blog. The XL Scoreboard will give a list of all Circles, the measures, and the date of last report, together with a global total. In time, the XL Scoreboard will provide rankings by circle, city and country, as well as average giving by XL Citizen at a circle, city, country and global level.

5. XL World Wide Wealth Directory:
The fifth Pixls are the Cause Pixls that make up the XL World Wide Wealth Directory. Every cause that is supported by XL Citizens has an opportunity to be highlighted and supported by other XL Citizens. On XL World, the World Wide Wealth Directory is part of the groups section, where each cause is set up as a group by an XL Citizen or Treasurer, and each cause is tagged with the following:

Here are the tags you’ll find in every Cause Pixl: The first tag will be C-PIXL (so we can search and find all of them within XL World amongst all the groups). The second will be one of the 8 tags that link to the millennium goals that the cause is related to on the Wealth Dynamics square:

The Treasurer or XL Citizen who sets up the cause will link it to the causes’ website and other XL Citizens can then join it to contribute or participate. Death, Taxes & Volcanoes

I heard that another life was lost on Mount Agung last week. ‘Agung’ means ‘big’. Would be better if it meant ‘really big and slippery when wet’. I was up the top of Bali’s Volcano with Darshana, Glenn and Lorin after XL National Day in April. It was the starting point for what has been the most extraordinary month of my millennium.

I’ve seen XL Nation circles grow to over $750,000 in direct contributions in a month (more than any one year of tracking donations under XL Results Foundation, which birthed this new nation), I’ve got all excited about the groundswell I’ve seen within the World Wide Wealth movement at the London Wealth Dynamics Experience and tour of Australia, I’ve had fun in conversation on Wealth Dynamics with the HUB team in USA, and I’ve been swept up in the momentum that XL Events, XL Vision Villas, Wealth Dynamics and XLTV have stepped into.

The Balinese believe Mt Agung is a replica of Mt Meru, a mythic mountain at the centre of our universe. In 1963, Indonesian President Sukarno ordered the Balinese to conduct their once-in-a-hundred year ceremony called Eka Dasa Rudra early to suit his calendar. Eka Dasa Rudra is an important 11 week ceremony to quell the power of the 11 main demons within Balinese culture. During the ceremony, Mt Agung erupted, killing over a thousand and displacing sixty-three thousand others. As you would expect, the Balinese blamed their country leader with the political equivalent of ‘told you so’. That moment marked the beginning of the end for Sukarno.

Over the last month, in between the trips to UK, Australia and Singapore, I’ve been sitting in Agung’s shadow with Teresa, Jade and Hanafi, creating the content behind the Wealth Spectrum and the Wealth Dynamics Lighthouse. Our intention is to create the vocabulary for the world we are stepping into (Seth Godin, Deepak Chopra and Bruce Lipton express it best from entirely different points of view).

The lighthouse has always been a symbol of both safety and adventure – depending on whether you were sailing towards or away from home. The uncertainties of our global economy have given way to a blasé come-what-may, which is when we are at our most careless. The Balinese will say it is the Eka Dasa Rudra sea demons. Cleopatra would say it is the calm seas before Octavion’s fleet passed the Lighthouse of Alexandria. However you look at it, it’s time to get equipped for a sea change…

Change as big and slippery as Agung.

XL Nation launches: A nation without borders

How many times do we get to experience the birth of a new nation? In the week that the G20 meet in the old paradigm of nation state politics, a new nation was born – by the people for the people. This week XL Nation made history as the first nation without borders, launched on XL National Day with entrepreneurs from over 30 countries signing the XL Declaration of Interdependence.

The Caterpillar

Over the last seven years, XL Results Foundation has grown into a global network of over 3,000 Life Members serving many hundreds of thousands of social entrepreneurs and change makers around the world. In our old paradigm, we operated as a social enterprise with a central office, central value delivery and hierarchy leadership of Country and City Leaders. Each year since 2002 we have doubled in size while operation with the typical organisation chart and top-down leadership. We had an ordinary membership structure serving an extraordinary mission: World Wide Wealth.

The Chrysalis

In the last six months all over the world we have witnessed the collapsing of the old top-down paradigm in our industrial economies. Control-and-conquer is being replaced by Connect-and-contribute. Channels are being replaced by communities – Rivers are being replaced by rain. Will nation states retain their empires? Can the old currencies, taxes and tariffs – the banks of the rivers – retain their power to contain our flow when we are the raindrops?

As the caterpillar of our old economy has switched from its binge fest into the imaginal cell soup of today, our XL Life Members have come together globally as stakeholders in a new nation: One in which we collectively craft the change we seek. XL Rock 'n' Flow

A thank you to our XL Leaders: Last week was a big week for us in Bali. We had our EBS Masters, our WDMP Leader Boardroom Club, and nightly discussions on the future of XL and social enterprise. This is in light of the massive changes taking place in the world right now. Richard Branson was at Davos promoting effective giving and said in a BBC interview, “My advice is get up and go. When we look back at this year we will find that fortunes have been made by those who have gotten up and gone this year.” In the latest Fortune magazine, Jim Collins said the question companies must ask is “What can we do not just to survive but to turn this into a defining point in history?”

Old models are crumbling and creating openings for a new world to arise. This is our time: Our opportunity to make a radical shift in our collective actions to capitalise on the radical shift occuring around us. A big thank you to our leaders who stepped forward and into this space last week: Our EBS Mentors, Dave Rogers and Mike Handcock; Michelle Clarke, Head of XL Results Foundation; Darshana Shah, Head of XL Events; Daniel Priestley, Head of Wealth Dynamics, who has stepped up to lead our online growth of Wealth Dynamics and all online testing including Talent Dynamics with Marcus Ubl and Bobby Norris; Andy Greenhill, who was voted in by the WDMP leaders as the Head of the Wealth Dynamics Institute, to lead the establishment of WDI as a college of learning for Wealth Dynamics, Talent Dynamics and our XL Coaching; and Teresa Stott, who has stepped up from Head of XL Planet to also Head of XL Group and support me and our leaders through this time of challenge and opportunity. Teresa will be moving to Bali in her new role.

In a time of uncertainty, what was clear for me last week was the unshakeable certainty I saw in our XL leaders and members that the need for bold action was now. While the work lies ahead of us in discussing and agreeing on the new structure that suits the new world we are moving into (and XL World will be a central forum for these discussions), I want to acknowledge the spirit we shared and how grateful I am for your leadership and the support each of you are giving to our mission and our community.

Collapses and Shoe Throwing

We’ve had many of our XL Members forwarding on the spam they got this week – XL Collapses! In a week when we’re hearing talk of automakers collapsing, and in a quarter when many financial giants already have, collapsing almost seems to be fashionable…

Around Christmas time of year our XL Members get spammed like this – always with the same message: We’re collapsing, we’re illegal, we’re immoral, we’re generally horrible people and probably ugly too. They are always anonymous and always hidden behind newly generated google or yahoo emails, and always accompanied by his-and-hers blogs with the same content.

We used to explain all the source of all these accusations in a sensible way. Now we direct people here – Spot the Clownfish is a game: You get to play! Plus it gives us a chance to turn some of this negative to a positive. Every time another email or blog pops up we help fund the rebuilding of reefs.

I’m writing this from Singapore, where we’re having a team meeting with the 20 members of our XL Head Office team and our General Managers from around the world – Michelle Clarke, Sean Redmond, Daniel Priestley, Wayan Suarma, Dave Rogers, Jennifer Koh – and we’ve been planning a very inspiring 2009. We ran our global live video call last week, were featured in the Financial Times, and launched XL World, our online nation. If we have collapsed then we must be in the Matrix.

Then again, maybe we are!! I found no sign of XL collapsing in the news, but I did see mention of an outbreak in wanton shoe throwing this week. Eager to find out more, we came across this…

Lee Kuan Yew drops a bombshell at CGI

What do you do when you're 85 years old and just had a pacemaker installed? Singapore Founder, Lee Kuan Yew, chose to fly to Hong Kong and say a few choice words that left us all dumbstruck. After a morning discussing renewable energy solutions with Bill Clinton and a panel of experts, I was sitting with XL Member Merrin Pearse (environmental expert) listening to Lee Kuan Yew, talking to Clinton. Clinton asked him about his view on renewable energy. LKY's answer was on the lines of "Renewable power will be insignificant to the world's needs - even if its successful it will reach 5% of our needs at the most".

He went on to explain that all earth energy came from the sun. Renewable energy came from current sun energy (solar, hydro, wind - all of it). Fossil fuels were our way of tapping into billions of years of stored sun energy and when that runs out, renewables will be a drop in the ocean in comparison.

It was at this point Merrin caught on to what LKY was saying, looked up and said "what did he say?". I did the same. If renewables could be inconsequential at best, why we were we all talking about it?! Could LKY be correct? I looked online. There it was: In 2006 ALL modern renewable sources - geothermal, wind power, solar power, and ocean energy added up to the grand sum of 0.8% of total global energy consumption. I didn't know that. Even at a growth rate of 30%+, that means in ten years it will make up all of 5% at the most...

So is LKY right? Is nuclear power the only viable alternative?

While that was going on, XL World was launched as the new online meeting place for XL Members and we will have our first XL Global Online Momentum on Friday 5th Dec, in the week of the Clinton Global Initiative in Hong Kong.

A Historic Week

This week we ran the first Wealth Dynamics Academy. We covered the 64 wealth vectors and the 8 eternal myths, bringing together the I Ching with the work of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell. It was a historic week for more than one reason, as we saw Barack Obama win the elections and the USA follow the myth we had just covered for Stars (and Stripes)...

Part of the programme was the live launch of a new enterprise - The World Wide Wealth game went from an idea to a proven concept with a prototype with advanced orders on 400+, an enterprise with a $1 million capital value and $80,000 of share subscriptions, market connections and a team. Congratulations Teresa Stott, who was selected as the company's new leader. Teresa was part of the Microsoft Team that launched the X Box.

WDMP Training Week launches Arjuna

Thanks to Sean, Frances, Andy and JP for organising such a brilliant week in Bali. Thanks to all our Wealth Dynamics Master Practitioners who created the space for magic to happen - especially in the gaps in time, like at the dinners, in the pool and our foray on the beach. The event saw the opening of Arjuna, XL Vision Villas' new conference room.

Arjuna is the archer warrior in the Hindu Epic, the Mahabharata. If you have been to Ubud, Arjuna is the huge statue at the top of the main road. Arjuna's conversation with Vishnu also forms the image behind us (above) that is carved into the wall in our new building. Vishnu's advice to Arjuna (which is known as the Bhagavad Gita) became the underlying undercurrent to the week without us being aware of it, and it also sets the scene for the global economy in the coming year.

In the face of similar circumstances of economic turmoil and political change sixty years ago, Mahatma Gandhi was influenced by the same ancient epic story as he was creating his own story of epic change.

How the financial crisis will transform money

In this video interview I answered five questions on the financial crisis - from the site where ten years ago the Asian Crisis unfolded. It includes how we the crisis highlights our power to create not just the value we trade, but the currencies we trade with. This video, with Darshana on the Singapore waterfront, is part of the lead up to our first Wealth Dynamics Academy which will be in November.

Muhammad Yunus

On Friday we met with Muhammad Yunus who has not stopped travelling since he won the Nobel Peace Prize several years ago. Last week he launched Grameen Bank with Carlos Slim in Mexico. At the end of the week we had a conversation in Singapore on the financial crisis and micro financing (which is growing while the rest of the financial markets have fallen). Some great insights and you can watch a video of the conversation here.

These include how trust in people can out-trump trust in assets as collateral for loan financing, why women now account for 98% of all Grameen Bank loans, how the average loan holder in Grameen now hold $150 in savings against $100 in loans, what effect the current crisis is likely to have on reaching the Millennium Goals and Yunus' advice to XL entrepreneurs.

On the same day, Muhammad Yunus accepted an XL Honorary Life Membership and so we will be hearing much more from this extraordinary entrepreneur.

Double Everything

I was inspired by my recent tour with Mike Harris, organised by Dan Priestley and the Triumphant & XL UK teams. If you get a chance to see Mike, take it. I've never heard anyone explain how to build a billion pound business so simply (and he has built many including First Direct, Egg and Mercury One-to-One).

It's simple: You start with an idea that meets an unmet need for millions (of course). You then define the conditions for satisfaction. You then make someone accountable for each condition, and off you go. Easy? Basically reverse engineer your business, and if you're going to go to the trouble of doing that, you may as well make it a billion dollar business... I'd love to explain more but I'm now off busy following his advice. Anyway, Mike explains it far better so do see him or read his book "Find Your Lightbulb". You can also meet Mike on his blog.
